Depth Therapy

Analytical Psychology
of Carl Gustav Jung

Carl Gustav Jung

In psychotherapy, there are various approaches and schools of thought. Among the most well-known are cognitive-behavioral therapy, Gestalt therapy, person-centered therapy, logotherapy, psychodynamics, and others. Each approach is grounded in its own theories, research, and techniques, with different processes for addressing problems. However, they all operate on similar principles and share the same ultimate goal: to help individuals function optimally in life.

My therapeutic approach is based on the analytical psychology of Carl G. Jung, also known as Jungian psychotherapy. This is a depth-oriented psychodynamic approach, meaning that symptoms and difficulties hold unconscious or unacknowledged significance, often rooted in childhood experiences and the nature of relationships. It considers the influences of the unconscious and harnesses the power of the therapeutic relationship.

According to Jung, our psyche is divided into consciousness and the unconscious, with each part serving distinct functions, containing various elements and processes. The unconscious encompasses everything we are not currently aware of, forming a substantial part of our psyche. This can be likened to an iceberg: the tip we see above water represents consciousness, while the vast majority lies beneath the surface, hidden from view, leaving us unaware of its true size and what it conceals.

The theoretical foundation of analytical psychology rests on concepts such as the individual and collective unconscious, archetypes, complexes, the true self, persona, and the shadow. In this therapeutic approach, interpretation of symbols—whether in imagery, active imagination, or dreams—is also utilized.

The goal of Jungian therapy is to promote awareness and integration of the unconscious processes of the psyche, alleviating the tension of inner conflicts, weakening complexes, and overcoming neuroses. It also aims to support and guide the process of individuation, through which a person becomes their true self and realizes their full potential in life.

Fundamentals of Therapy

A safe space is created gradually through building trust and establishing boundaries in therapy. It relies on the nature of the therapeutic relationship, where clients should feel free from judgment and evaluation. Feeling secure in this environment allows clients to open up fully, revealing their inner selves and maximizing the benefits of therapy.

Safe space

The relationship between the client and the therapist is crucial in therapy. It's a unique and somewhat artificial relationship that wouldn't typically develop in everyday life, yet it serves as a key aspect of the therapeutic process—something that reading books, watching videos, or chatting with AI cannot replicate. The quality of this relationship often determines the effectiveness of the therapy and the client's progress in achieving the desired changes.

Therapeutic relationship

A therapeutic session allows clients to experience what is known as a corrective emotional experience. This means that in certain situations, clients encounter positive experiences that replace and heal negative or traumatic memories from the past. Through this process, clients can feel trust, acceptance, support, or understanding in scenarios where they previously faced rejection and misunderstanding.

Corrective experience

In addition to experiences, therapy also offers new knowledge, insights, and understanding. Clients can recognize new connections, uncover underlying causes, and learn how to work through them. However, knowing the theory is not enough; what clients learn in therapy needs to be integrated into their lives. It’s essential to apply new insights in daily situations, view things from a different perspective, and continue personal growth even outside of sessions with the therapist.
